Wednesday Wellness: Make your Bed, Win a Scarf, and Make your Life Better!

A few months ago, I read that the path to happiness begins by making your bed. I made my bed as a child because my mother insisted I do so. I made my bed when I moved into a college dorm because my roommate made hers. I made my bed as a young married woman because I felt it was part of my job.

We didn't have money for a bed frame for many years, so our mattress and box springs sat on the floor. After my mother-in-law saw me make the bed on my knees six months pregnant with our second son, she bought us a frame. I don't remember feeling especially put out by doing this chore at floor-level, but I appreciated the gift.

As more children came along, I continued to make my bed as an example to them. When my status changed from stay-at-home mother to working mother, bed making was bumped down the priority list at some point.

Unfortunately, many other aspects of my life began to slip as well. I've been working at pulling many things back into line. Most people feel they have a few things out of control, also.

The advantages of making your bed:

  • It only takes about three minutes, but provides a strong sense of accomplishment.
  • Those who make their beds are usually more disciplined and organized than those who do not.
  • This small success can give you the courage to take on and achieve more difficult challenges.
I'm inviting you to participate in this journey with me, beginning with your bed making skills. Make a small goal to make your bed every morning this week. The only exception is if you are too ill to get up.

Leave a comment if you're willing to join me--and enter to win this beautiful handmade scarf!

Book Review - Crazy Daze of Motherhood by Jane Isfeld Still and Contest!

My review:

This book had an unexpected impact on my life. I had taken it along to read during a flight from Philadelphia to Dallas. I was reading (and chuckling) as the very full flight boarded. I was feeling lucky that the two seats next to me were empty when the final passenger boarded. She took the aisle seat, but with the middle seat unoccupied, I was still feeling very fortunate.

My seatmate took one look at the book's cover and asked if I were a mother. I hadn't noticed she was upset during the flurry of stowing luggage and getting settled. This stranger needed kleenex and thought that a mother would have some. I had felt impressed to purchase two packages, so I was well prepared. This encounter set the stage for a delightful conversation all the way to Dallas.

Well, I didn't get the book read until I got home. This is not only a very funny look at motherhood, but is also a book with which many parents will be able to relate. I thought I was the only one living the "I Love Lucy" life!

"Crazy Daze of Motherhood" is a perfect gift for Mother's Day, birthdays, or any time your favorite mother needs a lift. It's the antidote to those dreaded Mother's Day talks about those perfect mothers who bottle fruit, make their own clothing from rags, and can fix their own plumbing while wearing heels and pearls. While you're at it, get a copy for yourself!

From the back cover:

A mother's day is filled with all kinds of emergencies, from bumps and bruises to hospital stays. Find the perfect way to recover from your own family's little emergencies with Jane Isfeld Still's latest book on the hilarious daily challenges of a mother in the fray. You're sure to laugh and cry as you celebrate the joys of motherhood.

About the Author:
Jane is married to Rick Still, who she believes has the distinction of being the only man in history brave enough to give her earwax candles for her birthday. They had six children in eight years, and while her children were growing up, she discovered she had a great sense of humor. At least that was her take. Rick once said to her, "Honey, you know all those real corny things you say all the time? Who ever thought you could make money at it?" Her son Adam once told her, "Mom could you please stop telling jokes to my friends? It's really embarrassing." One of Jane's philosophies is, "You're not doing your job unless your children are worried about being seen in public with you."

To read more about Jane and her exploits visit her website at janeisfeldstill.com or her blog at janeisfeldstill.blogspot.com

Jane's Contest:
You can win a fun prize from Jane to help celebrate the release of her book. Just go to her blog at http://www.janeisfeldstill.blogspot.com and become a follower, and then leave her a comment and tell her that you're a new follower. You could win:

Book Review: "Oh, Say Can You See?" by L.C. Lewis

Oh, Say Can You See? is the fourth installment in L.C. Lewis' Freemen and Dreamers series. Although it continues the story of the American Revolution, it has been written as a stand-alone book. You will have no problem reading this book even if you haven't seen the previous works. But after you read Oh, Say Can You See?, you'll want to have the rest of the series.

The British have burned the capitol building, a rag-tag, untrained American army struggles against much better trained and equipped British soldiers. Baltimore will be the next target. Will it also fall to the enemy?
Francis Scott Key takes time from his diplomatic duties to pen an epic poem recording this important moment. Set to music, the anthem spreads across the infant nation and gives new life to the American struggle.

You will be drawn into the story by events, but want to continue to read because of the characters. L.C. Lewis weaves together historical figures and fictional characters in a masterful way that allows the reader to have a sense of what it was like to live during that critical time in American history. The author gives us a glimpse of a war that was deeply personal on many levels, and helps us understand the tremendous sacrifices made for our future.

My only challenge with this book was keeping it away from my college-age children long enough to read it myself.

Makes a great gift, and speaking of gifts, take a look at the contest posted on the sidebar to the left. Enter to win yourself a beautiful necklace designed for this book launch. Good luck!

Value of the Unexpected, and a Contest!

Yesterday was my birthday. My coworkers did an AWESOME job of helping me celebrate, as did my family.

A couple of weeks ago, my husband took me shopping for birthday gifts. I picked out a white blouse, a new jacket, and some boots. When we returned home, he put them in his closet for safekeeping.

In the meantime, life went on. I couldn't find my brown jacket. I wear it all the time because it goes with so many things. I hadn't left it in either office, the car, or anywhere else. I wondered if I had left it at church or a friend's house.

Imagine my surprise when I unwrapped my presents . . . including my old jacket. My husband had gathered it with the rest and it had been hanging safely in my closet. I was just as excited to see this "old friend" as for my new treasures.

Looking for a new treasure that could very well become an old friend?

I'm giving away my copy of Christine Thackeray's book, "The Crayon Messages". See my blog post of January 26 for my review. Loved the book.

Leave a comment telling me which of the following you've done to win:

Posted this on facebook with a link (1 entry)
Blogged about the contest with a link (2 entries)
Tweeted with a link (1 entry)
Left a thoughtful comment sharing an unexpected treasure you have found (1 entry)

Remember--must be a follower to win!

Winner will be chosen Tuesday Morning, February 9.

Good luck!
